Authors get asked all the time where they come up with their story ideas. I got the idea for this story while staying at the Clifton House Bed-and-Breakfast in Cincinnati, Ohio. It’s conveniently located a couple of blocks from my daughter, Tina, and her family. The first time I stayed there, I was not yet a published author. But by my next visit, I had published Murder in Mariposa Beach. A couple of years later, while snuggled in my bed in the Garden Room (which became the Terrace Room in the story), I got the idea of setting my next series in a bed-and-breakfast. I changed the setting from the city to the country, and Harrington House was born. If you are in Cincinnati, Ohio, and need a place to stay, check out the Clifton House. I grew up in Southern Ohio and Eastern Kentucky. I remember my Grandma Polly talking about family members who made moonshine “up in the hollers” where the water was cool and fresh. Of course, a few of those tales were added to the story.
In addition to family stories and research on the Prohibition years, I read a few books on Cincinnati, including Hidden History of Cincinnati by Jeff Suess, Images of America: Cincinnati Art Deco by Steven J. Rolfes and Douglas R. Weise, and Images of America: Cincinnati Revealed by Kevin Grace and Tom White.
