Stephen Mitchell has become widely known for his original and definitive translations of spiritual writings and poetry. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1943 and studied at Amherst, the University of Paris, and Yale. His previous books include Dropping Ashes on the Buddha, The Selected Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, The Book of Job, Tao Te Ching, and The Gospel According to Jesus. He lives with his wife, Vicki Chang, an acupuncturist and healer, in Sonoma, California.
