Cain and Abel

J

The man had slept with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, He Who Is Created, and she said, “I have created a man, just as the Lord did!” And later she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel became a shepherd, and Cain a farmer.

After a while Cain brought the first fruits of his harvest as an offering to the Lord, and Abel brought the fattest pieces of the firstlings from his flock. And the Lord accepted Abel and his offering; but Cain and his offering he didn’t accept. And Cain was very troubled, and his face fell.

And Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go for a walk.” And when they were alone, Cain turned on his brother Abel and killed him.

And the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

And he said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

And the Lord said, “What have you done! Listen: your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground. Now you are cursed: cutoff from the ground that opened to swallow your brother’s blood. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you. You will become a restless wanderer on the earth.”

And Cain said, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. You have banished me from this land, and I must submit to you and become a restless wanderer on the earth, and anyone who meets me can kill me.”

And the Lord said, “No: if anyone kills you, you will be avenged seven times over.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, to keep anyone who met him from killing him. And Cain went away from the Lord and settled in the land of Nod, Restlessness, east of Eden.
