The Promise to Abram

J

And the Lord said to Abram, “Leave your native land and your family and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you. And I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, and you will be a blessing. And I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you; and in you all the peoples of the earth will be blessed.”

And Abram went, as the Lord had told him to; and Lot went with him. And they arrived in Canaan and passed through the land as far as the sanctuary at Shechem, the great oak of Moreh. (The Canaanites were then in the land.)

And the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “I give this land to your descendants.” And Abram built an altar to the Lord there. And from there he moved on to the hill country east of Beth-El andpitched his tent between Beth-El to the west and Ai to the east. And he built an altar to the Lord there, and he invoked the Lord’s name. And Abram traveled on, by stages, toward the Negev.
