Abram and the Kings

LATE REDACTOR, USING THREE EARLY SOURCES

When Amraphel king of Babylon, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedor-laomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goyim went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (which is now Zoar), all these joined forces and proceeded to the valley of Siddim (which is now the Dead Sea). For twelve years they had been vassals to Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. Then in the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were allied with him came and defeated the Rephaites at Ashteroth-karnayim, the Zuzites at Ham, the Emites at Shaveh-kiryatayim, and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, as far as El-paran, on the edge of the wilderness. Then they turned back and went to En-mishpat (which is now Kadesh) and conquered all the territory of the Amalekites and of the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar. Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela marched out to the valley of Siddim and joined battle against them — against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim,

Amraphel king of Babylon, and Arioch king of Ellasar: four kings against five. Now the valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits, and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled and climbed down into them and hid, and the others fled to the hill country. And the four kings took all the livestock of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their provisions, and they went away.

And they also took Lot and his livestock — Abram’s brother’s son — and they went away (he was living in Sodom). And one of the survivors went and told Abram the Hebrew, who had settled by the great oaks of Mamre the Amorite, kinsman of Eshcol and of Aner, who were allies of Abram. And when Abram heard that his kinsman Lot had been taken captive, he called up his retainers, his own slaves, three hundred and eighteen of them, and followed them northward to Dan. And he divided his men into groups and attacked them by night and defeated them and pursued them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. And he recovered all the livestock, and also his kinsman Lot and his livestock, and the women and the captives. And after Abram returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings who were allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the valley of Shaveh (which is now the Valley of the King).

And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was a priest of Almighty God. And he blessed him, saying, “Blessed be Abram by Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be Almighty God, who delivered your enemies into your power.” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything he had captured.

And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and take the livestock for yourself.”

And Abram said, “I swear to the Lord, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth, that I will not take even a thread or a sandal strap of what is yours, so that you can never say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich. ‘ I will take just what my men have used up, and the share of my allies, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; they are entitled to their share.”
