And when Abram was ninety-nine years old, God appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk in my paths, and be blameless. And I will make a covenant between me and you, and I will multiply you very greatly.”
And Abram prostrated himself on the ground. And God said to him, “For my part, this is my covenant with you: you will be the father of a multitude of nations. And your name will no longer be Abram, Exalted Father, but Abraham, Father of a Multitude; for I will make you the father of a multitude of nations. And I will make you very greatly fruitful, and will bring nations from you, and kings will come out of you. And I will keep my covenant with you and your descendants after you for all generations, as an everlasting covenant, that I will be your God and your descendants’ God. And I will give you and your descendants after you the land that you are living in, the whole land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”
And God said to Abraham, “For your part, you will keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for all generations. And this is how you will keep the covenant between me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you must be circumcised. You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskins, and that will be the sign of the covenant between me and you; at the age of eight days every male among you must be circumcised, throughout the generations. Even your slaves must be circumcised, whetherthey are born in your household or bought with your money from a foreigner. Thus my covenant will be marked in your flesh as an everlasting covenant. And if any male does not have the flesh of his foreskin circumcised, he must be cut off from his people: he has broken my covenant.”
And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you must no longer call her Sarai, but Sarah, Princess. And I will bless her and give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she gives rise to nations, and kings will issue from her.”
And as Abraham lay prostrate on the ground, he laughed to himself and thought, “How can a son be born to a man who is a hundred years old? And how can a woman who is ninety years old bear a child?” And Abraham said to God, “May Ishmael too live in your favor.”
And God said, “Sarah will indeed bear you a son; and you must name him Isaac, He Laughs. And I will keep my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him. And as for Ishmael, God Has Heard, I have indeed heard you: I will bless him and make him fruitful, and will multiply him very greatly. He will father twelve chieftains, and I will make him into a great nation. But I will keep my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year.” And as soon as he had finished speaking with him, God vanished.
And Abraham took his son Ishmael and every male in his household, all the slaves born in his household or bought with his money, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had told him to. And Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and Ishmael was thirteen.
Thus Abraham was circumcised on that very day, and his son Ishmael and all his male slaves, whether born in his household or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised along with him.
