It is interesting, incidentally, that Nicholas did not choose to allude to his family in the iconography of the clerical seal he had used earlier, perhaps on becoming a canon of Salisbury Cathedral (by 1262) and still used by him when he was treasurer of the cathedral (by late 1275), although the legend does not refer to that office.²⁹ Nor, for that matter, did his mother, Ela, as abbess of Lacock.³⁰
