The second significant feature is the inclusion of the mayoral regalia in the form of the mace, sword and the so-called ‘King John’s Cup’, which played an important part in the visualisation of civic authority.12 The imaging of these together with the common seal was, in effect, a form of ceremonial display. Rastrick’s map of Lynn seems to be the earliest precursor of the Blomefield plan of Norwich because of the two features that have been discussed. Whereas Lynn was represented by an object that had been in use for some 500 years, and continued to be used locally, the seals on Blomefield’s plan span some 600 years and form a web of much more complex associations.
