Lead wears well, and so most papal leaden seals are finely preserved long after the missive to which they were attached has vanished, Indeed, some twenty-five medieval papal bullae have been recorded in Wales; ten of them on, or close to, the sites of former Cistercian abbeys:10 three have been found at Cwmhir Abbey in Radnorshire,11 and one of Gregory XI (1370–78; Figs 14.5 and 14.6) on the site of Strata Florida Abbey in Ceredigion12 – the imagery remained pretty constant for much of the Middle Ages: the busts of Peter and Paul on the one face, the name of the pontiff on the other..
