Whether it’s green juice, detox teas, coffee enemas, or IV vitamin drips, these ‘detox’ methods all claim to be able to rid your body of toxins in some way. But what’s missing from all of the ‘detox’ methods out there is a mechanism. They can’t even name the toxins they’re supposedly getting rid of!
You just need a liver and kidneys to detox, they do all the work, performing complex reactions to convert toxic substances into ones that are safe for excretion. In general, people might feel better after a ‘detox’ simply because they’re drinking less alcohol and getting more nutrients, that’s all! On the flip side, any negative symptoms that are often associated with things like juice cleanses are always twisted into simply being signs that the detox is working. Whilst this is a clever marketing tactic, it’s also absolutely rubbish. If you’re feeling dizzy and nauseous, you’re not ‘detoxing’, you’re probably just really hungry and need food.
Detoxification is a scientific principle that’s been hijacked by the wellness industry, and is wrapped in a scientific banner in an attempt to give the treatments and practitioners credibility. Having said all that, eating a balanced diet and not drinking too much alcohol is still a good idea! More specifically, it seems that there are some foods like broccoli which may have more of an effect on your liver than other foods due to their chemical make-up. The following recipes all contain foods like these, and no green juice in sight!
