Hugh Walpole

Hugh Walpole was born in New Zealand in 1884, before moving to England and swiftly establishing a reputation. His literary output was vast, and included the novels Fortitude and The Dark, of which Mr Perrin and Mr Traill was his favourite. He died in London in 1941.

Anthony Gardner is a freelance writer who contributes features, travel articles and book reviews to, among others, the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Times Magazine and the Mail on Sunday. He edits the Royal Society of Literature’s annual journal, the RSL, and is himself a Fellow.
