NEW WORLD

PLACE

Winemaking Europe and other areas in the Mediterranean basin with a long history of winemaking, namely France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Hungary, Austria, Portugal, Greece, Romania, and Croatia.

Everywhere else.

RULES

Tied to tradition, more rules and guidelines. Usually there’s a strict government system in place to oversee growing grapes and making wine.

Close to no guidelines. A relative free-for-all. This freedom leads to creativity and innovations. Technologically advanced. First to experiment.

NAME

Wines generally (but not always) named after the place they come from (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Chianti, Rioja). This is a nod to the importance of the concept of terroir.

Wines generally named after the grape (cabernet sauvignon, merlot, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay).

STYLE

More subtle aromas and flavors, subdued colors. More refined, generally more earthy (expressive of terroir).

More outgoing, intense. Color is usually deep. Aromas more likely to “jump” out of the glass. Bombastic. Generally more fruit-forward.
