OLD WORLD |
NEW WORLD |
PLACE |
Winemaking Europe and other areas in the Mediterranean basin with a long history of winemaking, namely France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Hungary, Austria, Portugal, Greece, Romania, and Croatia. |
Everywhere else. |
RULES |
Tied to tradition, more rules and guidelines. Usually there’s a strict government system in place to oversee growing grapes and making wine. |
Close to no guidelines. A relative free-for-all. This freedom leads to creativity and innovations. Technologically advanced. First to experiment. |
NAME |
Wines generally (but not always) named after the place they come from (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Chianti, Rioja). This is a nod to the importance of the concept of terroir. |
Wines generally named after the grape (cabernet sauvignon, merlot, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay). |
STYLE |
More subtle aromas and flavors, subdued colors. More refined, generally more earthy (expressive of terroir). |
More outgoing, intense. Color is usually deep. Aromas more likely to “jump” out of the glass. Bombastic. Generally more fruit-forward. |
