“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:6-7).
As I walked through my herb garden after a recent thunderstorm, I noticed that some of my young tender plants had been damaged, while others had definitely not made it through the fierce winds and pelting rain from the night before. Other plants seemed to be untouched. The difference was quite clear. The plants with shallow roots were toppled over and didn’t survive, while the plants with deep roots, anchored in the soil not only survived, but looked as if they were thriving. Not unlike how our own lives should be in Christ. We are to grow, learn and dig deep into the knowledge of Christ’s love and wisdom each and every day of our lives, so that when the adversities come, big or small, we can have something to hold on to, someone to trust in. Christ is to be our anchor no matter what we encounter along life’s way and when he is, we will be examples of what it looks like to be thriving, instead of just surviving during the storms of life that come our way.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6). What kinds of roots do you have today? My plants that had not yet grown to maturity, those with shallow roots were either damaged or destroyed. The plants that had roots firmly established deep and abiding in the soil withstood the storm. Today is a new day and I urge you to accept Jesus Christ into your heart and then spend yourself (time, talents, and money) developing deep roots grounded in Him that will sustain you through the rest of your days.
