Saving Baby Moses

Exodus 1 – 2

A new king in Egypt feared the Israelites because there were so many of them. He thought they might try to take away his kingdom. So the king made the Israelites work as slaves. He also gave a terrible order: all new Israelite baby boys must be thrown into the Nile River to die!

Amram and Jochebed had a new baby boy. Jochebed kept him hidden for three months. When the baby was too big to hide any longer, she made a little basket and covered it with tar so it would float. Then she put her precious baby in the basket.

Near the king’s palace, Jochebed hid the basket in tall grass at the river’s edge. “Stay here,” she told the baby’s sister, Miriam. “Find out what happens.”

An Egyptian princess came to the river and found the basket. When she opened it, the baby was crying. “He is one of the Israelite children!” said the princess.

Miriam thought quickly and hurried to the princess. “Should I find an Israelite woman to nurse the baby?” she asked.

“Yes,” said the princess. Miriam ran and brought back Jochebed, the baby’s own mother! “Take this baby home and nurse him for me,” the princess said. Jochebed held her sweet baby close, thanking God for keeping him safe!
