Born to Darkness

• IDIOM •

A phrase highly popular among the Children of Satan, “Born to Darkness” is a euphemism, not for being physically born, as an infant is born from the womb, but rather for being turned from a mortal into a vampire. A spiritual rebirth, a change from being a beloved child of Heaven to a minion of Hell, “Born to Darkness” essentially means that the mortal, who is a mortal no more but an immortal vampire, is inextricably in the service of Satan, damned to do dark deeds eternally, to be an instigator of suffering and torment in the world, and to continue to turn God’s children away from the hope of eternal salvation and peace.

The idiom appears in The Vampire Lestat (1985). For more perspectives on being Born to Darkness, read the Alphabettery entries Children of Darkness and Children of Satan.
