Cold Sandra

• MORTAL •

Being of European descent, the Mayfair witching family consists mostly of lighter-skinned Caucasian women, except for Cold Sandra, who shows the darker skin of her African heritage. She has two daughters, whom she names Honey in the Sunshine and Merrick, the future vampire fledgling of Louis de Pointe du Lac. Unlike her own twelve siblings who can pass for Caucasian, Cold Sandra, who cannot hide her African heritage during a time of rampant racism, takes her two daughters to a derelict neighborhood in New Orleans, where they live together with Merrick’s godmother, Great Nananne. Throughout the years, Cold Sandra uses her witch magic to attract men in the hope of finding a good husband and father. The last man she attracts is Matthew Kemp, an Olmec archaeologist. She convinces him to come to New Orleans to study artifacts and read a book belonging to Great Nananne’s older brother, Oncle Vervain, a Voodoo man.

Cold Sandra and Matthew wed. Persistent in his archaeological studies, he takes Cold Sandra, Honey in the Sunshine, and Merrick on an expedition to Guatemala, where Matthew falls ill and dies while researching in a cave. Matthew leaves Cold Sandra enough money to take care of herself and her older daughter, Honey in the Sunshine. She leaves Merrick in the care of Great Nananne but promises to come back for her. Merrick never hears from her again, except in spirit after her mother and sister are murdered. The bodies of Cold Sandra and Honey in the Sunshine are found in their vehicle, which the murderer submerged in a swamp in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Cold Sandra appears in Merrick (2000). For more perspectives on Cold Sandra’s character, read the Alphabettery entries Great Nananne, Honey in the Sunshine, Louis de Pointe du Lac, Matthew Kemp, Merrick Mayfair, and Oncle Vervain.
