“Declaration in the Form of Graffiti”

• PHENOMENON •

“Declaration in the Form of Graffiti” is a hidden text in the guise of graffiti, to prevent mortal eyes from reading vampire secrets. Mortals would see the declaration as meaningless vandalism, but a vampire could read the declaration within the graffiti. And only a vampire would have written such a declaration in the form of graffiti. Written in Dracula’s Daughter vampire bar in San Francisco around 1984, the declaration informs vampires of Lestat’s exploits in the late twentieth century of writing an autobiography and producing rock music, both of which reveal vampire secrets. The declaration also demands that Lestat, Armand, Gabrielle, Louis, and all of Lestat’s cohorts be put to death. The message spreads worldwide through the Vampire Connection. Many vampires come to the 1985 concert of the Vampire Lestat rock band seeking to fulfill the declaration’s demand.

“Declaration in the Form of Graffiti” appears in The Queen of the Damned (1988). For more perspectives on this declaration in the Vampire Chronicles, read the Alphabettery entries Akasha, Gabrielle, Great Burning of 1985, Lestat de Lioncourt, Louis de Pointe du Lac, Vampire Bar, and Vampire Connection.
