A vampire who transforms a mortal into a vampire is called a “maker”; a mortal transformed into vampire is called a “fledgling.” Makers can create many fledglings, but fledglings can have only one maker. In some cases, fledglings refer to their makers as “mentors,” as with Seth and his fledgling Fareed.
An example of the fledgling-maker relationship between vampires is Merrick, fledgling of Louis. Similarly, Louis is the fledgling of Lestat; Lestat is the fledgling of Magnus; Magnus is the fledgling of Benedict; Benedict is the fledgling of Rhoshamandes; and Rhoshamandes is the fledgling of Akasha, the first vampire.
The idiom appears in Interview with the Vampire (1976), The Vampire Lestat (1985), The Queen of the Damned (1988), and Prince Lestat (2014). For more perspectives on fledglings in the Vampire Chronicles, read the Alphabettery entries Akasha, Benedict, Fareed Bhansali, Lestat de Lioncourt, Louis de Pointe du Lac, Magnus, Merrick Mayfair, Rhoshamandes, and Seth.
