Maria Godwin is the cousin and foster mother who cares for Jesse Reeves shortly after she survives the fatal car wreck that kills her parents. Maria and her husband, Matthew, take great care of Jesse while at the same time feeling indescribably rewarded for having such a splendid child in their home. As a dancer and teacher, Maria helps foster Jesse’s love of culture, especially music, painting, and world travel, all of which are instigated and encouraged by her mysterious aunt Maharet. Jesse lives with Maria and Matthew until she is accepted into Columbia University. After that, she begins work for the Talamasca.
