When Jesse Reeves is birthed two months prematurely after her mother dies in a car accident, Maharet identifies Jesse in the hospital as a relative and takes her to live with cousins in a lavish, old, two-story apartment on Lexington Avenue in New York. The cousins are Matthew and Maria Godwin. Matthew is a doctor and takes great care of Jesse, providing everything she needs, namely her English nanny, her grand education, and especially contact with her elusive aunt, Maharet. Jesse eventually leaves them to attend Columbia University.
