The Voice

• IDIOM •

After the spirit of Amel fuses with Akasha to create the first vampire, Amel’s consciousness is suppressed for six thousand years. But when Mekare kills Akasha and takes Amel’s spirit into herself, Amel becomes conscious and desires to leave Mekare’s traumatically wounded mind. Using his connection to every vampire across the world, he speaks to them as the mysterious Voice, especially to the older, more powerful vampires, influencing them to use their powers against other vampires. As if possessed by the Voice, these powerful vampires use the Fire Gift to immolate weaker vampires along with their coven houses, reminiscent of the Great Burning of 1985. Most vampires hear this Voice, and few have the power to resist its persuasive effect. Even the once-peaceful Rhoshamandes obeys the Voice, goes to the Amazon, kills Maharet, and kidnaps Mekare. It is not until Lestat and the vampires convene a council that they realize that the Voice is actually Amel seeking a way to escape Mekare’s mentally damaged state.

Once Amel is finally transferred into Lestat, the Voice is further silenced. But it is not until Amel is ultimately transferred into a clone of the body he once had in the city of Atlantis that the Voice is finally silenced in the minds of vampires forever.

The Voice appears in Prince Lestat (2014). For more perspectives on the Voice in the Vampire Chronicles, read the Alphabettery entries Amel, Fire Gift, Great Burning of 1985, Lestat de Lioncourt, Maharet, Mekare, and Rhoshamandes.
