Nearly nine thousand years before the Common Era, the genetically enhanced Amel creates luracastric cities, such as the city of Atlantis, to protect humans from the ravenous appetites of the Bravennans. A cultured civilization develops inside, which is entirely distinct from other humanoid interaction, so much so that Amel refers to everything not protected within his luracastric sanctuaries as the Wilderness, since it is in that wild world where people find the greatest suffering through the influence of the Bravennans, for whom human suffering is a source of food.
The Wilderness appears in Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis (2016). For more perspectives on the Wilderness in the Vampire Chronicles, read the Alphabettery entries Amel, Atlantis, Bravennans, and Luracastria.
