Early designs of the app's article view included buttons to jump to the next or previous article directly from the navigation bar at the top of the screen. When the team wanted to add an option to share articles with friends, something else had to go, and it forced them to take a hard look at the next/previous buttons.
Rusty: We had a lot of back and forth discussion about losing those arrows. Several other news apps use the next/previous arrows to move through articles, and I assume that's because it works so well in the built-in Mail app. However, unlike the Mail app where I usually want to read all of my emails, I'm normally not nearly as invested in reading all articles in a given news section. Unless you plan to read all articles, it really isn't any more convenient or efficient to blindly move past three or four articles you're not interested in than it is to return to the list view and find an article you want to read. When we needed to find room for the "Share Article" button in the navigation bar, it was an easy decision on my part to sacrifice the next/previous article arrows.
