glowering over a newspaper every morning,
your face dewy with teasmoke,
is because life without ritual
would be body without ribcage.
But let there be just enough rib
between the two of us
for a rumour of edge –
frugal hint of rampart and crag –
and an ever-widening commune
of breath.
