If you read the book before these acknowledgments, you probably figured out that I really, really love mysteries. And I owe a bit of thanks for that to a librarian. As a kid, I was an overzealous reader who’d read most children’s books at our library when I discovered Agatha Christie’s mysteries at the suggestion of a librarian. I’ve been hooked ever since. I don’t remember the librarian’s name, but I will thank every librarian now—there aren’t enough pages to express how important you are, the times you had just the right book, or how often you made me feel at home when I was the new kid in town. Thank you.
When I finished writing this book, I wasn’t sure anyone would get what I was trying to do, but Laurel Symonds did. I couldn’t be more grateful you’re my agent, Laurel. I’m one lucky writer.
Kendra Levin was another person who got it—thank you for making sure the Barclay Hotel found a home at Viking. I hit the jackpot twice, because Aneeka Kalia took over as editor. This book wouldn’t be what it is without you, Aneeka.
Copyeditors catch all those last mistakes (and tiny plot holes . . . ): thank you, Janet Pascal and Laura Stiers, for your sharp observations.
It’s one thing to imagine the story in your head; it’s a whole other (mind-blowing!) thing to see it illustrated. Thank you, Xavier Bonet, for bringing these crazy characters to life. Thank you to the art department and Jim Hoover for making this book look so good.
Being a writer is a lonely job sometimes, but my friends always get it too. Thank you to SCBWI, Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, and Pikes Peak Writers for always giving me a place to find comradery and learn new things. My best writer pals Deb, Jenny, Laurel, Ali, Nicole, Mary, and Pam and Sarah—thank you for listening, and for cheering me on.
Last but never least: thanks to my family, for supporting me when I’m off writing or daydreaming, and for going with me to the library. It’s where all the cool people are, you know.
