BIBLIOGRAPHY

An Explanatory Note

The world of commercial aviation is saturated with information. Daily, weekly, monthly, and annual statistics on safety, fuel prices, financial, legal, even medical issues mix with a copious stream of analyses, reports, legal filings, and press releases from everyone with an interest in aviation—not just airlines, but regulators, consumers, labor, airports, manufacturers, security experts, politicians, and many, many more. Everyone who’s ever flown has something to say about it.

The following chapter-by-chapter bibliography includes not just the extensive, sometimes-arcane mix of information and analysis on which this book draws, but also a selection of thoughtful and illuminating material in popular media readily accessible to the curious reader. Even taken together, though, all of the writings included here form only part of the basis for this book.

Both in this endeavor and in my two decades in aviation, first at the FAA and DOT, then as a Washington aviation consultant, I’ve interviewed, consulted, conversed, and corresponded with dozens of experts and industry leaders and critics. They range from senior pilots to airport directors, economists and lobbyists, airline and union officials, government regulators and political appointees, and more. Though these individuals are not listed—understandably in such an ultrasensitive business, some explicitly preferred not to be named—their information and their perspectives all contributed to this book.
