Jay looked away and wiped at the tears on his cheeks.

“But that can’t be us,” he said, “we celebrate Hanukkah.”

“We had a sister who converted when she married a bad man,” said his uncle. “You don’t have to tell me what you saw. I know that one. Violence and triumph and the boy who got away. Look again.”

“I don’t want to look again.” He crossed his arms over his chest. The fire had burned down low while he’d been looking. His parents must be coming home soon.

“One last time and then it’s off to bed,” his uncle said.

Jay wanted to get up and run off to bed right now, but he felt a strong pull to look at the lantern. To fall into another story.

His uncle shook it again and again he saw bright sparks, but this time they turned to stars and the stars moved and he was in a spaceship and it landed on a planet where only one house could be seen for miles and miles...
