My grandmother was 18 years old when she boarded a train and escaped Austria. As she was leaving, her mother gave her this locket. It was 1938 and it was the last time they saw each other; her mother was sent to a death camp in Belarus. This was her engagement locket. When I was six or seven, my grandmother gave the locket to me. I wanted desperately to open it, but the hinges were frail and she told me I should open it only once a year. I’ve only shown the inside to my husband and my best friend.
