THE SACRIFICE FOR A DREAM

Vincent goes to the grocery store. There he sees Rina, but she cannot look at him. He walks up to her anyway and kisses her cheek, as always. She throws her arms around him. She’s never done that before.

“Oh Vincent,” she sobs.

“It will be okay.” he says, awkwardly holding her. “Hopefully this will work out. He always wanted this.”

“But changing his name? Why in the world?” she utters.

“That’s Paulie,” Vincent says, as if it’s some kind of an answer.

“But why?” Rina asks again.

“I will never know,” Vincent responds. “This dream of his to be an FBI agent is one thing. But turning his back on his family name? I can’t think about it without wanting to throw up.”

Rina strokes Vincent’s head, then withdraws from their embrace,

“Where’s Papa Tony?” he asks.

Rina wipes her eyes and points to the rear of the store. Vincent walks toward the loading dock and sees the old man. When their eyes meet, Tony tears up. Then he stiffens and points to a truck parked at the dock.

“Unload that,” he says curtly and walks out the back to the alleyway. Vincent watches him go, the old man wiping his eyes with his handkerchief.

When Vincent later meets up with the Neighborhood guys, he does not say a word. They will find out on their own someday.
