STAYING QUIET

Gino and Gus say goodbye when they trade places with Mikey and Angelo. Vincent walks them back to their car and hands them five gold coins each. They stare at him, then thank him.

“You still owe,” Gino says, putting the coins in his pocket, “but this is a nice gesture, Vincent.”

“I know and I still acknowledge that. I got my private investigator’s license, so pass that around up here. And if you need anything, give me a ring, Gino. Take care.”

Gino nods. They give each other a quick embrace. They will take the work car back to Milwaukee.

Vincent goes to gather up Angelo, Mikey, and Stanley.

“So, what happened?” asks Stanley who is sitting on the edge of the bed. “Did you get the stamps?”

Vincent slaps him on the back of his head.

“You are an absolute fuck up, and I do not know what to do with you. Your uncle has seen the light. Now it’s your turn to let this go. If you don’t, we will be feeding little pieces of you to the fish. Do you understand?”

“Yeah, but what about the stamp collection?”

Vincent looks at Angelo who immediately gets the message. He punches Stanley so hard his skull bounces off the headboard.

The three, plus a duct-taped, unconscious Stanley in the trunk of the car, drive back to Chicago. Stanley is quiet and will remain so.

They pull up to Fat Louie’s scrap yard. They get out and are greeted by Cosimo Lido, Fat Louie’s yard boss. Mikey has called from a gas station. Everything is arranged.

They pull the limp Stanley out of the trunk of Vincent’s Thunderbird.

“Vincent, take off,” Angelo says.

Vincent is not happy with this outcome, but Stanley is a serious threat to them. They really have no choice. Angelo and Mikey do not want Vincent involved.

Vincent leaves, dreading that he has to bring this incident to Johnny V’s attention. He’s conflicted whether he should. Things could go badly, but he has no choice. He will try to see Johnny V tomorrow.
