When Carmine Commaretta checks into the YMCA, he’s surprised to learn that his assigned case worker is the daughter of a family from the Neighborhood. Gloria Genco, a young woman with dark black hair and bright eyes, warily greets Carmine.
“Hey, how you doing, Gloria? I remember you when you were little. Your father still working for the city? Is your mom still at the bakery? Tell me everything. I would love to see them.”
“Yes, my dad’s still with the city. He and my mother bought the bakery, so my mom is there most of the day. But we need to get down to business, if you don’t mind.”
Carmine nods as she outlines all that he’s required to do. She tells him that he’ll be able to use the facilities in one week but he needs to do a number of things first. He’s allowed all the visits he wishes, within the rules and per visiting hours. After about a half an hour, she concludes the meeting, and they say their goodbyes. Another attendant takes Carmine to his room, which he’ll share with three others also on supervised release.
He puts his meager belongings in his assigned locker. His roommates, having been forewarned of who he is, will keep to themselves. On his second day, Carmine starts receiving all kinds of food as well as money to buy necessities. The returning prince is home, and his crime family is showing him his due.
After a week, Carmine, having endured his waiting period, ventures to the handball courts where he’s greeted by his friends and Outfit members. He is the heir apparent and may one day take over the leadership. But he has enemies he’s unaware of, not only among the FBI and local law enforcement, but within the family as well. He plans his future, visiting secretly with some associates and openly with others. Eventually, he sends word to Papa Tony that he wants a meeting.
