Dedication

To my beloved grandmothers: Phyllis, who always encouraged my writing and enjoyed reading pretty much anything I composed, and Helen, whose pragmatism and persistence have become a model for me in recent years. I miss you both.

To my darling husband, Mark, for his unending support, and my children, Jack and Bridget, for encouraging their mom to follow her dream. Thank you for putting up with me and loving me unconditionally.

To my dear friend Frank, who was one of the first to read the early draft of Wind and Shadow. Wish you were here. BB.

To my kindred spirits, without whom this work could not have been completed: Allie, Angela, Anna, David, Golda, Kate, Jenn, Jenny, Monica, Rob, Sandi, Sue, and Tara. I can never thank you enough for your incredible patience, thoughtful feedback, and creative suggestions. Your belief in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself, has kept me going.

To Crystal and Karen. This book could not have been written without your childhood friendship. I treasure the memories of our adventures, and they continue to be an inspiration to me.

And, last but definitely not least, to my parents, Doug and Ada. You taught me how to love and appreciate books and reading, among many, many other things. I love you both more than words can express.
