Afterword

We’ve come full circle, all in a cycle of risk management for climbing. From first identifying risks and hazards to prioritizing them to then devising solutions to mitigate and manage them, we hope to have shared with you two mountain guides’ approaches to climbing rock, snow, and ice.

We started with the fundamentals of the craft—gear selection, how to use it, and the basic techniques. After introducing these, we moved beyond the individual tools and presented them as part of an advanced, holistic system that goes beyond rules-based solutions into the realm of judgment-based decisions and expert application of the tools themselves.

In parting ways, we hope you’ve learned some new techniques for your own practice, but even more so, developed a new mindset for climbing and leading others into the mountains.
