Gut-Healing Smoothie

Serves 1 or 2

I REMEMBER during the first couple of months after diagnosis, I literally drank all of my meals because my gut didn’t want to digest anything. For me, smoothies were perfect for supplying nutrients while letting my gut rest, and this one in particular felt extremely nourishing and anti-inflammatory on my worst days.

The smoothie is boosted with bovine gelatin, which you could add to any smoothie you invent. Bovine gelatin is full of collagen, which is great for gut healing. Just make sure your gelatin comes from a good organic source, preferably grass-fed cows, and doesn’t contain any added sweeteners. You can find bovine gelatin in health food stores or online. There are several good brands, even vegan brands that use plant ingredients similar to gelatin; I use the organic Great Lakes brand.

If you want to make this smoothie more like a milk shake, use a frozen banana and/or 1 cup frozen peaches. You could also add a few ice cubes in with the water.

1 ripe banana, peeled

1 peach, pitted and cut into chunks

1 orange, peeled, segmented, and pitted

Juice of 1 lemon

1 tablespoon bovine gelatin

½ to 1 cup water or plain unsweetened coconut water (enough for it to mix together smoothly)

Put everything into a high-speed blender, blend until smooth, and enjoy.
