Old-Fashioned Chocolate Shake

Serves 2

I HAVE the greatest memory of getting the rare and very occasional treat of a chocolate shake when my family went out for dinner. It was even rarer when I was allowed to have one at home, so making them with my dad was an event in and of itself. I would lay out all the supplies and we would spend all afternoon making our masterpieces. They were super-thick and creamy, enough to weigh down even a kid with an endless appetite, like I was.

Now I’m making new milk shake memories, with my updated version of a classic chocolate shake. This is just enough to pour into a very large glass and share, with two straws, soda-shop style.

4 dates, pits removed

1 frozen peeled banana

2 cups chilled canned coconut milk (full-fat or light)

2 tablespoons raw cacao powder (or unsweetened organic cocoa powder)

1 teaspoon real maple syrup

Place all the ingredients in a high-speed blender and whip until smooth and thick. Pour into a glass and enjoy life like you used to!
