Makes 8 to 10 servings
4 c. all-purpose flour
1 t. salt
1/4 c. sugar
2 T. plus 2 t. baking powder
6 T. shortening
1-1/2 c. milk
Garnish: butter, strawberries, whipped cream
Sift together dry ingredients in a bowl; add shortening and enough milk to make a soft dough. Spread in a greased 13"x9" baking pan. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes, until golden. Cool; cut into squares. To serve, split open each square; spread bottom halves lightly with butter. Top with strawberries and whipped cream; add top halves.
A touch of whimsy...use Mom’s old cow-shaped milk pitcher to top desserts with cream.
