Makes about 5 dozen
1 c. shortening
1/4 c. molasses
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 egg, beaten
2 t. baking soda
1/2 t. ground cloves
1/2 t. ground ginger
1 t. cinnamon
1/2 t. salt
2 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. sugar
Blend together shortening, molasses, brown sugar and egg in a large bowl; set aside. Combine dry ingredients except sugar in a separate bowl; mix well. Gradually blend dry ingredients into shortening mixture; shape dough into a ball. Wrap in wax paper; refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight. Shape into walnut-size balls; roll in sugar. Place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes; do not overbake.
Pick up a pack of white paper lunch sacks and wrap up a lot of sweet gifts in a hurry. Simply fill the bags with goodies, fold over the tops twice and add a brightly colored sticker...done!
