I said goodnight to the Colonel, and Mr. Winkley and I went into our room. I closed both doors so he couldn’t go out, sat down and lit a cigarette.

I’d promised Nancy a bluebird.

I went and got her bird feeder that was in my closet. It was still in the box and hadn’t been put together. I opened the box and laid out all the pieces on the table.

I got a screwdriver and started putting it together. I was going to need a post to put it on, and a shovel to dig a hole for the post, but I knew a construction site where I could get all that stuff.

You only get one bluebird in life, and for me that bluebird was Nancy.

About a week later, when Stanley and I got off from washing dishes at the diner, we put up the bird feeder by Nancy’s grave.
