JAWAD

People see what they want to see. Hear what they want to hear.

But if you listen, there is a small voice inside you that talks. That says, “Don’t trust him. Don’t get in that car.” There is so much noise, though, so many other loud voices, the ones that say:

Make friends.

Don’t make waves; get along.

You’re so paranoid.

In America you have to act like an American.

BE NORMAL.

Criminals are poor. Black. Brown. Thugs. Terrorists. Cockroaches.

They’re not the best people.

Why would rich white people need to commit crimes?

What the voices don’t say: It’s not need; it’s want.

What the voices don’t admit: They’re wrong.

What the voices don’t do: Save you when you cry out.

(’Til human voices wake us and we drown.)
