Royalty James has it all—a successful career, a brilliant son, and is dating a good man. The only thing missing is an all-consuming passionate love, which she once had with one man. A man who still has the power to set her body and soul aflame with a simple touch. Devin Toussaint, a man who could destroy her once he discovers that her son is also his.

Tre called for Raini. She held one finger up to him and looked at me. “Royalty, no matter what, I love you. I see the resemblance between Ryder and Devin, and sooner or later so will other people. Your secret is safe with me…for now.”

I bit my lip, real fear hitting me. I hadn’t shared with anyone that Devin was the father of my son, not even with my best friend, but she’d figured it out. What if he did see me with Ryder—a son I had never told him about? Common sense alone would make him ask who’s the father, and Devin had an abundance of both book and common.

I inhaled deeply and glanced around me to make sure no one watched me as I headed down the street. He was, after all, Tre’s enemy.

The closer I moved toward him, I could see that he’d been crying. Unblinking with teary eyes, Devin shifted his stance and smiled in greeting. He seemed vulnerable, and that was an emotion I thought he was incapable of feeling.

I greeted him. “Hey. How long you been here?”

“Not long. No worries, Royalty, I’m about to leave. Tell Raini I didn’t come to start trouble.”

I rubbed my arms to fight off the thrilling chill that coursed through my body at the rumble of his deep voice, before hugging myself in relief. He didn’t see me with Ryder. “Then why are you here?”

“I hadn’t been to his shop in years. Used to come here almost every day at one point,” Devin said quietly, before averting his gaze past my shoulders. “I wanted to be here for Deaux.”

I shifted from foot to foot, standing across from him, keeping my distance, knowing that to be any closer would be certain death for me. “How did you know him?”

Devin unbuttoned his suit jacket as he responded. “He helped me when I needed it the most.” He then pulled his jacket off, his muscular frame visible through his tapered white button-up shirt that made a stark contrast against his dark chocolate skin, and moved closer to me, placing it around my sweater-covered shoulders. “Better?”

I resisted closing my eyes at the warmth and smell of his expensive cologne emanating from the material around me. “You’re going to be cold now.” The temperature had been steadily dropping as day made way to evening, and it had been a cold night even for a January in New Orleans.

Devin shrugged and returned to his position against his car. “As long as you’re warm.” He inhaled deeply and looked toward the event. “It looks like a nice crowd. Deaux meant a lot to this community, even when he ran the streets. That man stayed on my ass and sometimes I miss him like he just died.”

His honest admission surprised me. “Yeah, I miss him so much, too.” I fought the tears that had been falling most of the day. “With my own father gone so much in the military, Deux was my father, too. God knows that he gave me and Raini hell about being the best students and leaving those raggedy boys alone who only wanted one thing. I had to hear his mouth whenever me and Raini wanted to go somewhere. Crazy how we knew the same man, who meant a lot to both of us, but didn’t know it.” I sniffed.

Devin’s jaw tightened as he studied me. “Not surprised. You and I didn’t do a lot of talking.”

My stomach twisted painfully at the reminder of the fiery chemistry between us. Hugging myself tighter, I returned my focus on the event and watched some of the participants head back to their cars. “Maybe you should leave now. If Tre sees you, he’ll be pissed.”

He pushed off his car and I took a step back. “I don’t give a fuck about Tre. As far as I’m concerned, the only good thing he’s done since he’s been in office is clear Deaux’s name and re-dedicate his shop. Deaux and that place over there saved my life. I’ll be damned before I let anyone keep me from paying my respects. I’m only keeping my distance for Raini’s sake.”

Surprised at the sudden attack of jealousy I experienced as he said my best friend’s name with such admiration, I said, “You know she really loves Tre.”

He met my direct gaze. “The whole city knows.”

I folded my arms and warned, “She only has eyes for him.”

Devin responded smoothly, “And I only have eyes for you.”
