On the long stroll through the literature and history of walking there are several milestones along the way: from the late nineteenth century onwards one comes across titles such as Alfred Barron’s Foot Notes, or, Walking as a Fine Art (1875) and Arnold Haultain’s Of Walks and Walking Tours: An Attempt to Find a Philosophy and a Creed (1914). The first major overview of the subject, however, and an undisputed classic in its own right, is Morris Marples’ Shanks’s Pony (1959). Following closely in Marples’ footsteps, Miles Jebb’s Walkers (1986) covers similar territory, while in recent years there have been a number of major contributions to the subject. Of these, Rebecca Solnit’s Wanderlust: A History of Walking (1999); Joseph A. Amato’s On Foot: A History of Walking (2004); and Geoff Nicholson’s The Lost Art of Walking: The History, Science, Philosophy and Literature, Theory and Practice of Pedestrianism (2010) all proved particularly valuable in researching this account. The final word, however, should go to Francesco Careri’s Walkscapes: Walking as an Aesthetic Practice (2002), a brilliant analysis of the aesthetic function of walking from its earliest biblical sources through to the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century.
In addition to the histories outlined above there are also a number of anthologies which gather together the finest examples of the many essays, poems and novels the act of walking has inspired. Amongst these, the best selection is to be found in The Pleasures of Walking edited by Edwin Valentine Mitchell (1934). More recently, Duncan Minshull has edited two further collections, The Vintage Book of Walking (2000) and The Burning Leg: Walking Scenes from Classic Fiction (2010). Mention here should also be made of Bruce Chatwin’s The Songlines (1987) which contains a broad selection of quotation and observation on the subject of walking and nomadism, culled from his notebooks.
