You may have heard writers speak about ‘the flow’. This refers to the state you enter when you’re deep in your writing and creating; when the words flow out of you, through you, as if written elsewhere and simply (beautifully) being downloaded to you.
This flow is accessible to us all, in many different forms. It helps us to conjure and create what we’re calling in next, and to feel connected to source, energy, ideas and inspiration.
You can find your flow by deepening your connection to yourself, your body, your energy system, your intuition, the Universe, and your Guides.
To help you tap into a deep connection, imagine sending a mental note or energetic email—asking something, confirming something, perhaps requesting help or support—to your Guides, the Universe, your intuition, or to your own inner wisdom and source of information.
In response, you may feel this information, see it, hear it, sense it or intuit it. You may receive insights and answers through your body; seeing, hearing or feeling the answers you receive. Words or images might drop in, or you might wonder whether you’ve just made up the answer yourself. Whatever response you receive, tune in. If it feels right—if it feels expansive—trust it and go with it.
For me, the flow feels slightly different to receiving direct insight and answers from my Guides or intuition, but it comes from the same universal source of something deeper and higher than my physical body.
So next time you’re sitting down to write or create, if you feel like you have no idea what you’re doing, or you wonder if the timing is right, or you don’t know if you should go this way or that, then tune in. Close your eyes and take a deep breath, in and out. Let the deepest connection guide you on how to take the next best step.
What if I told you that while working towards your dreams and creating what you feel drawn to create, you don’t need to know the ‘how’?
What if I told you that when you try to micromanage every single part of your life and work (which we all do, when our perfectionist self comes to the party too early and you have to entertain her without any other guests around to keep her busy) you actually hold yourself back?
Instead, what if you allowed yourself to trust (and enjoy) the process; to know that, while you can figure out the tough stuff, you can’t always know the ‘how’ of the awe-inspiring synchronicities, the magic, the miracles that come your way?
I sometimes look back on situations that have transpired in an incredible way I couldn’t have foreseen, and thank the heavens that I hadn’t been in charge of writing that ending, that outcome. Because if I had been, it wouldn’t have been nearly as wonderful.
And yes, this works at the opposite end of the spectrum too. Sometimes things just go completely off kilter, so far away from your plan that you feel like you’ve lost a sense of yourself.
The beauty in letting go of the ‘how’ is that you allow yourself to be supported by the magic of creativity and the source of universal energy and flow; by something bigger than yourself; by the energy that holds your dreams in place while you work towards them, day by day.
There’ve been times when I’ve set a goal, done my best to figure it out, done the work, showed up, but still not known the outcome, or exactly how it would all play out. But I’ve let myself release my expectations, and those are the times I’ve felt the most joy.
I let myself do this consistently. When I sit down to write my books, I don’t know how they’ll turn out. When I create something new, I don’t know how it’ll turn out. When I set a goal in my business or life, I have no idea how it’ll turn out.
When I make big, bold, beautiful plans, I have no idea how things will fall into place. But I show up anyway.
You might not get what you want. It might all go in a completely different direction. It might not turn out how you expected … and that might be the best thing that could happen.
Cultivating the deepest connection requires a combination of:
Trust it’s all within your reach and capabilities. You don’t need to do anything extra in order to tune into the guidance and flow that’s always available from within, above and below.
Take care with your dreams and your drive. Stay devoted to what’s important to you, and self-doubts will soften.
Commit to this connection; to receiving it, to asking for it, and to using it for the greater good.
Don’t rush it. You can’t anyway (ha!), so funnel that energy into something more important: showing up for yourself and trusting the energy of what you’re creating.
Meditate on it, focus on it, draw it in. Clear your mind of the clutter, then when guidance and flow drop in, you can recognise and receive this.
Let your intention be pure and strong. Ask for what you want. You’re allowed to. Sit in the embodiment of what you’re calling in. You know how.
Be grateful for each moment of flow you cultivate, receive and hold. Thank it, and let yourself ask for more.
Create space to do your best work, to ask for support from something higher, deeper, greater. Then allow yourself to receive it. When you let go of the ‘how’, you get to invest your energy where it matters most. Don’t focus on events you can’t control; focus instead on the events, actions, mindset and energy that keep you in your power, that keep you on your path, that keep you focused.
When you show up with an open heart and mind, when you align your thoughts and energy to where they matter most, then you can stay in your flow, drawing what you desire (or something better) towards you, and letting the ‘how’ work itself out. You have way more important things to do anyway.
I know I am always able to cultivate the deepest connection, to support me as I step into flow and alignment with my work, path and life.
