Publisher's Note

This cookbook was originally published in 1882 as an aid for Swedish immigrants to the United States. The recipes are a mix of Swedish classics and American favorites, all presented side-by-side in both Swedish and English. Though we've updated the layout of the book, we've decided to preserve the integrity of the original text, which is full of charm as well as a great deal of practical advice. Thus, you'll discover some unusual measurements, such as “butter the size of an egg” or “1 tea cup granulated sugar.” You'll find the table of weights and measures on page 375 useful for interpreting these less- than-scientific amounts.
