Chapter 3. The Values Connection
I have already touched on the importance of getting clear on what your 'why' is in life; in this chapter I will discuss it further. Before you get clear on your why, you need to understand why, and how, you got to the point where you are now.
There is any number of ways to practice minimalism. Relatively speaking, it may not seem too much of a stretch to clear out a kitchen draw, or remove an old piece of furniture. But behind each action there is a reason to do it. Some are obvious and straightforward. Often all that is required, is a quick decision to get rid of old stuff. Simple!
It is not always like that. And often getting rid of something results in replacing it with something else. Since this is a book about minimalism, let's explore that a little further.
As stated earlier, minimalism has many entry points. Barriers to entry are generally low when we are talking about surface or superficial changes. For example, anyone can recycle a plastic container. It requires very little energy or thought. Behind that action is a belief that recycling is good or useful, and a value that recognizes the importance of looking after the environment.
When your values are clear and defined, and particularly when your beliefs and behaviors are aligned to them, any action generally gets filtered via the values framework. In the example above, throwing out a plastic container in any old waste bin would not be an option, as the connection has been made that such an action would be counterproductive, and damaging to the environment.
It would make sense, then, for a person wanting to pursue or explore a minimalist lifestyle to be able to join the dots, so to speak. The more connections that can be made between the benefits of choosing a minimalistic way of living, the stronger the chances of staying the course.
When I am coaching, I often remind my clients about their personal alignment to values, and behaving in ways that reflect those values. If a person seeks a trusting relationship, for example, they need to acknowledge that trust needs to be present in their life to be able to truly experience it. Values and behaviors need to be aligned for the best outcomes.
So it is with minimalism. When a person strengthens their beliefs and their values in alignment with a minimalist ethos, and behave in ways that demonstrate those values and beliefs, then they have made the connection.
If your aspirations or hopes are to follow a more simplistic and less materialistic way of living, then ensure you are aware of the reasons you are aspiring to do this. Be clear on what is important to you, and identify and practice those behaviors that support that way of living.
Clarifying what is important to you can also be a great way to check exactly how far you are willing to take this journey. And that is a good thing to know. Live with awareness.
