Wade stood, still weak. He leaned against the wall. “First, we have to learn how to control my powers.”
“Okay, how do we do that?” Drake asked.
“Damned if I know,” Wade said.
“You’re the big brain. If you don’t know, we are doomed before we even start,” Dane stated.
“We already figured some of it out,” Monty stated. “Wade had to close his mind down to stop the enhancement of our ability.”
“For a while it was going full blast,” Ross stood.
“It’s like a light switch,” Drake said.
Everyone looked at him.
He stood. “The switch that has a dimmer.”
“It adjusts according to how bright you want the light,” Wade stated.
“Right. So you have to do the same thing with your mind,” Drake continued. “When you need us to hear voices in a small area, you have to tell your mind to tone it down. If you want the range to be more, you can adjust your mind, just like you would do the switch.”
“There is another possibility,” Ross stated. “The intensity could have been feeding off of all of us.”
“Because we were all in this room together, it made the ability more powerful,” Wade suggested. “It could be that my mind also feeds off of your abilities.” He saw the confused looks on their faces. “Imagine I am the sun. Each of you revolves around me, drawing your strength from me.”
“Like the planets do,” Dane noted.
“Exactly,” Wade stated. “I am the sun, you all exist in your own bodies, doing your own thing.”
“Just like the planets do,” Ross nodded.
“Yes. Unlike the planets, you draw powers from me. I enhance your powers and you fuel mine.”
“So now you are the center of our universe?” Drake smirked.
“It’s always been that way,” Monty slowly moved from standing against the wall. “Thank about it. All your lives, the four of us have rotated at will. When Wade had situations, we all stopped and gravitated towards him.”
“Because you made us?” Drake replied.
“Did I?” Monty stared at Drake.
“It’s not because he is the universe, it’s because we love his ass,” Drake replied.
Wade smiled. “The feeling is mutual. I don’t know all the answers, but Monty is right. I have to learn how to control this power I have.”
“First you need to learn more about it,” Ross pointed. “That is only the first book. I believe there are more you need to absorb before we go anywhere to take on anyone.”
“He’s right, Wade,” Monty walked over to him. “You have to take in all that your mother has to say. If that one book is any indication, you are going to have to take it in small bites.”
Ross walked over. “There is no way your body can take a continuous hit like that.”
Wade shook his head. “Something is telling me we can’t wait. What is happening in Bristol is not only dangerous to the world, but to us personally. If we are the only ones who can stop it, there can be no delays. We have to get to Bristol before all hell break loose.”
“We will find a way to work it out,” Monty stated. “Saving the world and all that comes with it is cool. Saving you is priority, understood?”
“Understood,” Wade nodded. “What are we going to tell Rachel?”
“We?” Drake chuckled. “That’s your woman. You have to figure out what you are going to tell her.”
“You never told her about our ability?” Ross asked.
“No. Why would I?” Wade asked. “So she could think I’m crazier than what she already thought?”
“What in the hell do you think she is thinking now?” Dane laughed. “If she is still downstairs when we get there, I’ll be surprised.”
“She’s there,” Wade replied. “I can feel her.”
“See, it’s freaky stuff like that you keep saying that makes us wonder if you really are human,” Drake said, then walked out of the room. “I’m hungry. I’m going to eat.”
“You’re always hungry,” Dane laughed, then looked at Wade. “Well, at least we now know why we couldn’t penetrate your mind. You had a lot of shit up there.” He followed Dane out the room.
“You know we ride five deep,” Ross stated. “We go where you go. As for Rachel, cray or not, she’s locked in with you. But I think we better do a little recon before going to Bristol, just to have an idea of what kind of evil we are going up against. You two talk. I’ll be downstairs.”
Wade and Monty waited until the room was clear. “Two men in a car would not make you sad. Whatever you heard in Dan’s thoughts, you will tell me when you are ready. Tell me about the two men in the car.”
Monty nodded. “They are receiving orders from someone to track your movements.”
“What are they looking for?”
“Unclear at this time. However, they know your relationship with Rachel and feel she could be beneficial to them.”
Wade walked towards the door. “I think we need to change their minds on that thought.”
Monty stopped him. “You are not strong enough to confront them. Hell, none of us are. That little episode of yours drained all of us.”
“We can’t let them watch us at will.”
“Yes, we can,” Monty replied. “Take your emotions out of the equation and think.”
Wade exhaled. “The fact that we know what they are thinking can be used against them. Rachel needs to be with someone at all times.”
“I agree. I will have a conversation with Dane and Drake to make sure she is with someone at all times,” Monty stated. “We need to do the same with you.”
“I can take care of myself.”
“I know you can,” Monty chuckled. “I’ve seen you in action. However, I want to think about this. Whatever information you have in that brain of yours now, people were willing to lock up your parents for life. These days, people will go to the extreme. If they get their hands on you, all of us may be in trouble.”
“They have no idea what I know. That’s my insurance.”
“If these people were working in the same field as your mother, I can only assume they have big brains, too. There is a reason your parents did not want you connected to them. These people didn’t care years ago, but now they are aware of your existence. They will come for you.”
“No worries, let them come,” Wade hit Monty on the shoulder. “They may have one, maybe two big brains. We have five. Their brains don’t have shit on the Tysons. Come on, let’s go eat.”
The two men joined the other downstairs. Dinner was on the table when Wade walked into the room.
“How you doing?” Rachel whispered in his ear.
“I’m starving, Babe,” Wade replied. “How are you doing?”
“That was an interesting chain of events upstairs. You scared the hell out of me,” Rachel whispered as she took a glance over her shoulder to make sure Dan could not overhear them.
“I was right there with you for a minute, but then the strangest thing happened.”
“What?” Rachel asked eagerly.
“I realized you were beside me the entire time.” He looked down into her eyes. “I knew you would be with me through it all.”
“That is so sweet.” Rachel smiled up at him. “That shit’s not going to work.” She picked up the bowl from the counter. “You are going to talk to me before your ass goes to sleep tonight.”
Wade smiled as she walked away from him. Rachel was right. This had taken an interesting turn. One that could endanger her and the rest of the family.
