EPILOGUE

image

Far away upstairs in an attic, a hazy figure clapped her hands together and smiled. She’d been waiting for true love to come to her home for so long that she’d begun to think it would never happen. This house needed love. It couldn’t survive without it. That was why she’d stayed.

Slowly, she walked to her window. Love had escaped her in life, and she’d regretted the loss every day. She hadn’t been able to leave until she’d gotten it back.

Now it was here, and the winds of change were blowing her way.

She looked out the porthole window and saw that it had begun to snow. The whiteness made everything look so clean. So pristine. She’d seen too much darkness.

Movement caught her attention, and she looked down to see an ambulance pulled up at the curb. Its red lights flashed against her white snow, marring it.

She didn’t like the red.

She backed away. It would be gone soon, and it would take the dark spirit with it.

Then she could go.

She sat down in her rocker one last time and pushed against the floor with the tip of her toe. The chair gave out a haunting, but comforting squeak. She closed her eyes and felt the love swell throughout the home. It reached out to every nook and cranny. Finally, her mission was complete.

A door banged shut downstairs, and she smiled. “Peter,” she whispered.

The hazy figure faded, and Adelaide Calhoun crossed over forever.
