Seattle could very well be construed as the hip but perpetually rainy headquarters of the supercorporations Microsoft, Starbucks, and Amazon, but there is more to Seattle than that. Many in Seattle would rather take the comfortable six-figure salary over the path of a founder. Those who decide not to will find a more laid-back community that boasts multi-billion-dollar exits in the likes of Tableau and Zulily. This culture of contentment rather than competition has translated into more customer-oriented companies, such as Costco and Starbucks, with Nordstrom as the pioneer of the consumer culture. Seattle is not the Valley, nor does it want to be.
