PROJECT: BREATH TREATS

The parsley, mint, and charcoal (available in most health-food stores) in these treats will help keep your pet’s breath sweet-smelling. (Charcoal often comes in capsule form, so you’ll have to break open the capsules to release the product.) Look for organically grown herbs for these biscuits, or try growing your own. Our beloved Gertrude had the worst breath imaginable; these easy treats helped.

1 cup organic whole-wheat flour

¼ teaspoon salt

½ tablespoon charcoal

1 egg

1½ tablespoons safflower oil

¼ cup fresh organic parsley, chopped

1 tablespoon fresh organic mint, chopped

Image cup whole or low-fat organic milk

01. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Grease a baking sheet with butter or a little oil. In a bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and charcoal. In another bowl, combine the egg, oil, parsley, and mint. Stir the flour mixture into the egg mixture, then add the milk until the dough has the consistency of drop biscuits. Drop heaping tablespoons of dough onto the greased baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch between biscuits. Bake for about 15 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. Store, tightly covered, in a glass or ceramic container in the refrigerator for up to a week or in the freezer for up to three months.
