PROJECT: HOMEMADE JERKY

Making your own jerky is a great way to be sure you always have a high-protein, healthy snack on hand to reward your pet. These are great treats to share with your dog’s feline pals as well. Choose a local grass-fed meat whenever possible, as this reduces the environmental impact of pesticide and herbicide use, as well as the pollution that is a by-product of trucking food hundreds or thousands of miles.

01. Grease a baking sheet with butter or a little oil. Cut the beef liver and/or kidney into thin strips and place them on the baking sheet. Bake at 200°F for about 45 minutes, until the meat is cooked through for a soft treat, or until dried for jerky. (The time will vary, depending on your oven and climate.)
