Holding On to the Passion

Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.

MATTHEW 24:12

I remember a time before Nick and I started dating when he found out from a friend of mine that I swam at the local swimming pool at six o’clock each morning. I had been doing these early morning swims for almost a year, and up to that point, I had never seen Nick at the pool. All of a sudden, I began seeing him there each morning, already in the pool and doing laps by the time I got there.

There is nothing pleasant about doing laps at daybreak — the water is cold and getting out is even colder! But alas, Nick was in love and on a mission. After about a week, we “accidentally” (actually a well-planned accident on Nick’s part) bumped into each other, and I asked him what he was doing at the pool so early in the morning. He looked at me indignantly and exclaimed, “What do you mean? I’m always here at this time.” Of course, only later were my suspicions confirmed. No one had to convince Nick to do it, because he had a passion for a petite Greek woman and he was going to do whatever it took to take home his prize! And his passionate affection won the day — we eventually were married.

Many of us begin our relationship with God like this. But just as marriage partners must work proactively to sustain their passion for one another, we too must work to keep our passionate commitment to God fresh and strong for the duration of our Christian walk. This means spending time with him in vital communication through his Word, prayer, and making ourselves at home in his presence.
